Title: Monitoring Raw MIDI data
Post by Morpheus on May 19th, 2004, 9:53am
I've been using MIDIOX for some time now and currently rate it as the best MIDI prog I've seen.

What I would like to see is the ability to display the raw data bytes that are received at the MIDI input without it attempting to convert it into actual events.

The only program I've found that will do this runs on an old Atari ST, but that's becoming a right pain to maintain.

Obviously a PC version would save a lot of hassle.

Thanks,

Mark

The RAW data bytes ARE displayed without conversion, although additional information is also displayed.  If you look at the Status Data1 Data2 bytes, you are looking at the raw data bytes.

You can also log the RAW data bytes by choosing log format: "Raw MIDI Messages".

That's not quite what I was referring to.

I'm after the ability to see individual MIDI bytes as they arrive. The RAW mode display still shows the data as MIDI events.

Currently if some illegal data is sent via MIDI, you don't get to see it in the MIDI monitor.

If you send the following data:-
B0 00 80 00 81 00
MIDI OX reports that it's received
B0 00 00
Which isn't very helpful.

Regards,

Mark

MIDI-OX probably doesn't see that illegal data, depending on how it was sent: Drivers will always massage (and maybe discard) the erroneous MIDI data as it parses and places each message into a DWORD for the Windows MIDI short message.

MIDI Yoke (a driver) also only passes along legal data.
