Using the computer keyboard and the midiox keyboard icon, I am able to play my external midi keyboard just fine, no problems. My Windows 11 laptop indeed recognizes the midiusb port in Device Manager and routs play commands perfectly.

However (changing nothing, just a moment later), if I load a midi file into the midiox player and press play, I get a "there are no midi devices installed on the system" error and asks that I install a driver.

What in my midi file, exactly, turns off recognition of my external midi keyboard? As I said, it works perfectly just "playing" the computer keyboard.

Hi
perhaps your diver is not Muiti-client (can only be used on one application at a time)
MidiOx and the MidiBar player are in fact separate applications.

You could try...
1) load MidiOx start the MidiBar player
2) close MidiOx leaving the MidiBar still open and try to load a file

What are you using for the sound generator? MidiMaper or something else?

Good idea. In fact, I don't even know the manufacturer of the USB midi cable I'm using. I'm tracking that down from the person who sold it to me and maybe I could get a multi-client driver to work with it.

Meanwhile, I don't have access to the keyboard until next week (it's actually an Allen digital organ with MIDI capabilities!). I'll let you know when I work with it.

If it matters, there's another clue. I can play a loaded MIDI file with midibar without closing midiox on a different laptop, my older one with USB-A ports, while my new laptop has USB-C ports. Could something like that, or perhaps the older technology on the older laptop make a difference in some way?

It sounds like it might be a newer version of Windows might be causing the problem.

You might like to look at different Midi File PLayer.

Is a free player that has a few more functions than the bundled Midibar.
NOTE the link is http not https which is a newer and safer type of web page.
You may get a warning from your browser (or you may not).
I have been using this for years, but it is up to you if you want to download it.
