Hi, Heres my deal...
I have,
1 Dell Inspiron Laptop ( plenty of memory and HDD space)
ess maestro soundcard
2 Line 6 Vetta combo
3 keyboard with midi capability
4 Cool edit
I want some basic information on how I can use the guitar and keys to record. I would like to incorporate some midi sounds and I have NO CLUE where to start or anything. (Haven't even installed Cool Edit yet)

Short of writing me a book here, I was wondering if anyone out there has found a simple yet complete info base I could access on the web somewhere, or anything that will get me started. I just want to create track recordings and get the most out of the toys I have, but I don't even know if an ess maestro will do, and don't even know where to find connecter cables that match the back of my laptop. I HAVE found cables available, but (it appears) they do not match the connections on the back of my pc.
I have 1 PS/2, 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 1 Video out, 2 USB's, and 3 mini audio connectors on it (for headhpones, microphone, and I guess auxilliary in, or something) Also there's some sort of round s-video thing on the side. I don't know if I need an adapter, or if something I have will plug right into a standard MIDI cable of some sort. I was told I need some sort of external soundcard device to do anything. ( like an Xtigy)
Can anybody steer me in the right direction?
Can I make a guitar sound like a keyboard?
Can I make a keyboard sound like drums?
Can I record from the MIDI outs without mic-ing stuff?
Does "Windows" have stuff in it I need to use?
Where's a good place to find...
1 cool samples for use with my guitar or key as a controller
2 a place that sells everything one might need for all this sort of craziness
3 samples that are not guitar sounds that I can program into my Vetta amp.

First off: Cool Edit is an audio recorder -- it won't record MIDI data. If you want to record MIDI data you'll need a sequencer. Most sequencers today record and synchronize both audio and MIDI tracks. With what you have you can record the Audio output of the Guitar and the Audio output of the Keyboard.
