Some think that the only Virtual MIDI Cable that will work in Windows XP is MIDIYOKE NT, as some that worked in Windows 95/98, such as Hubi's Loopback Device, were never ported to Win XP.

However, I know of two other Virtual MIDI cables, also freeware, that were written for XP:

One is the Maple Virtual MIDI cable:

Another one is: LoopBe1:

Anyone know of any others?

It would be interesting to see a comparison of these Virtual MIDI Cables for XP--MIDIYOKE NT, Maple, and LoopBe1, any others if there are any.

Has anyone tried all of these, and could compare them?

Here are a few obvious differences: MIDIYOKE NT has eight ins and outs, Maple only four. LoopBe1 only shows one in and out in MIDI devices dialogues, but supposedly one can connect eight in and out devices to it. LoopBe1 also automatically detects any MIDI feedback loops, and disables the device if that happens.

But what about other factors--such as system resources and memory used, latency, stability, compatibility, possibility of causing any kind of problem, etc, etc.

Anyone compared these VMCs?

Searching the Internet I've found another. It's Hubert Winkler MIDI Loopback device or "Hubi's MIDI loopback device.
It can be found at www.sonicspot.com/hubismidiloopbackdevice/hubismidiloopbackdevice.html or also at www.sionsoft.com/hubi.html or www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Hubis_LoopBack_device/. If you enter "Hubert Winkler MIDI Loopback device" into any internet search engine such as
Google you will be able to find other related links and download sites for the driver.
I cannot give you any opinion about what is best since I had no time to make tests.

Hello,

I used up my 8 Midiyoke ports and need 8 more
in and 8 more out ports.

It seems that LoopBe1 has only one port. Is this correct?

but how many ports?

There is the Midi Thruway which I suspect does
not work in Windows XP. Not sure how may ports it

Hubi’s has only 4 ports and I suspect it will not
work in Windows XP.

It would be nice to know the facts and how stable
these virtual port programs are. How many ports
they have and compatibility with Windows XP.

I suspect that multiple virtual port programs can
co-exist in Windows XP.

Hello,

I should add that Midi-Yoke and Midi-Ox
have been stable in my WXP DAW. :D

As it turns out I was able to work around
the 8 port limitation. ;D

Gotta say Jamie OConnell is the man! :)
Free very useful software.
Will contribute soon!

FYi, the loopbe product gomes in a 30 port version also for $20. Also, the mapletools midi driver has a 12 port add-on you can download (free).

One question, do any of you know if these kernel mode virtual midi port drivers are in fact any more efficient or less latent than user mode drivers such as Yoke and others? They seemed to jump through hoops to use a kernel mode virtual midi port driver, but I'm not sure why or if it makes any difference.

I've been using Loopbe1 for maybe 2 years now and it works flawlessly under XP. I highly recommend it. But it's only ment to patch multiple application MIDI I/O. I'm here on the web site looking for something to patch hardware MIDI ports together, as I now use more than 8 ports (MOTU and Emu single).

Well I was on a mission yesterday for Virtual MIDI cables and tried Loopbe as well as MIDI-OX. Actually I've used OX b4 and never had any problems.

So anyway, loaded in Loopbe and tried to use it with Ableton and MIDI Clock and I got nothing but 'serious program error' after 'serious program error', whereas OX worked flawlessly.

Just thought I'd share my experiences incase anyone else ever thinks about trying any other drivers!
