Title: Stuck Notes - Sonar 2 and VanBasco Karaoke
Post by ebinary on Nov 25th, 2002, 3:10pm

Anybody seen this.  I figured out a way to hook VanBasco karaoke player to Sonar 2.1 XL (on Windows XP Pro) using harware and a loopback cable.  Someone suggested I could do this using Midi Yoke.

Unfortunately, although it DOES send notes, it seems to drop a lot of note-off events.  Bottom line:  I get a ton of stuck notes when playing back a fairly busy Standard Midi file. Wathcing the Dxi instrucment, you can see it start gobbling up polyphony and not releasing it.

I know the idea is sound, because it works perfectly using hardware.  Stranglely, certain midi channels (like channel 9) have  a lot more stuck notes than other channels.

Sonar is configured to have no MIDI output, so it should not be due to a feedback loop.

I am confused by your mention of DXi instrument?  Is this VanBasco karaoke player a DXi instrument?  Or are you just saying that you are using a DXi to play the sound in SONAR?

If you are just using SONAR to play the sounds and the VanBasco karaoke player is performing the MIDI file, then either Note Offs are getting dropped somewhere, or possibly the soft synth does not properly distinguish between real Note Offs and Note On's with zero velocity?  Both of those messages should cause a note off.  Another possibility might be a sustain pedal beging held down.

You might try inserting MIDI-OX into the chain to see what data is being transferred out of the VanBasco karaoke player  and into SONAR.

Sorry for the confusion.  Within Sonar 2, I have one DXi GM module instantiated (Edirol VSC), which is listening to all MIDI channels.  I only mentioned it because it includes a display of the "polyphony in use", so I can confirm what my ears tell me - lots of notes are stuck.

VanBasco is a very solid MIDI karaoke player that I've used for years.  The setup is:
VanBasco -> Midi Yoke NT 1
Sonar <- Midi Yoke NT 1

The issue must be with Midi Yoke - here's the test cases:

Case 1:

 1. Plug in MidiMan 1x1 Midi interface, with MIDI cord physically routing input to output
 2. Open Sonar song with one DXi GM listening on all channels
 3. Ensure only MidiMan Input  1 is assigned in Sonar
 4. Open VanBasco karaoke player.
 5. Ensure only MidiMan Ouput 1 is assigned in VanBasco
 6. RESULT: PERFECT PLAYBACK

case 2:
 1. Disconnect MidiMan from computer (or leave it connected, I've tried both)
 2. Open Sonar song with one DXi GM listening on all channels
 3. Ensure only Midi Yoke 1 Input is assigned in Sonar
 4. Open VanBasco karaoke player.
 5. Ensure only Midi Yoke 1 Output is assigned in VanBasco
 6. RESULT: PLAYBACK WITH MANY STUCK NOTES

If the DXi did not respond to Velocity 0 events, the hardware solution would show the same problem.  But the hardware solution works perfectly.  I just retested to make sure.

BTW - the host machine is a Dell Optiplex 2.4 GHz Pentium with 1Gb DDR RAM, running XP professional.  I tried with and without the registry edits for thread priority - no change.  I may try to insert a MIDI OX to debug the situation, but I'll probably stick to hardware for now.

In any case. thanks to MIDI OX for providing a neat tool, even if it didn't work out for me.

Eric

Well, it's apparent that something is going on, but I haven't seen this problem with MIDI Yoke, ever...  I use it all the time to funnel MIDIBar or Media Player with MIDI Files through MIDI-OX, or to connect SONAR output to MIDI-OX to monitor MIDI Output, or to connect MIDI-OX output to SONAR input to verify input data.  I have never seen stuck notes occuring.
