UndecidedI am trying to use midiyoke with a karaoke player and cakewalk ver 8.xx. Cakewalk will record the midi file in real time but there are gaps in the recorded part. I think it's a sync problem. If I set cakewalk to midi sync nothing happens because I assume that the karaoke player is not sending the start/stop message. I'm trying to do this so that I can record into cakewalk while having access to the words in the karaoke player. anythoughts?

If the Karaoke Player can Slave to MIDI Sync, Cakewalk can act as master.  You seemed to indicate that the Karoke Player will not act as Master, although Cakewalk can also act as Slave to MIDI Sync.  Without Clock Sync between the 2 apps, you will just get the freewheeling loose timing you're currently seeing.

If the Karaoke program can act as Sync Master, it would be sending MIDI Clock (F8) at a rate of 24 per beat.  Just sending a MIDI Start (FA) would not be sufficient for Sync anyway.  I would predict that unless there are options for it, it does not support MIDI Sync as either Master or Slave.

You could download and install MIDI-OX to verify this.

actually I'm not sure of the F8 data now. I had Cakewalk send some data to midiox and I don't see anything that resembles sync code. Am I looking in the right place? How abt some info to view this data?

Thanks

If CWPA 8.x has it in the same place as CWPA 9.x: you need to go into Options | Project | [MIDI Out] Tab and check [x] Transmit MIDI Start/ContinueStop/Clock and you have to choose the port number that will issue the Sync.

You should also make sure that MIDI-OX is not filtering clock: Options | Filter...  System Realtime [...]
