Running status

I am trying to track down a problem with a Behringer FBC1010 pedal board with a Yamaha WX7 wind instrument connected to it. The FBC is supposed to merge MIDI data but pressing a pedal with patch chage command in the middle of a Breath controller stream sends a stream of patch changes. I thought that the WX7 might be sending out running status data on the breath stream. I have tried selecting the Running status switch in the General options, but I am still unsure if the data comming in is processed to remove te running status and give seperate breath controller messages Is there a way to see absolute raw data that is comming in to the PC? Does the MPU driver (Win2K) convert running status to seperate MIDI messages? Anyone know?

MIDI-OX will show running status if you turn it on in the filter (it's off by default). Look in Options | MIDI Filter... System Realtime [...]. Unselect Active Sensing [OK] [OK]. MIDI-OX's data is identical to the raw data except that the bytes are split up. Status, Data1 and Data2 make up the raw MIDI message. The other fields just expand on that. Under Windows a MIDI Input driver MUST remove running status and expand the message (by Windows rules), and I'm sure the Generic MPU does. The rules do allow an Application to send running status, but the output driver has to deal with that.

Thanks Jamie. So am I right in saying that I can't tell if the WX7 is putting out running status controller data in any Windows viewer? Your runnning status can only look at the output from an app. is that correct? Do I need a DOS MIDI vewer? Do you know of one? Thanks

| That is correct, because the Windows MIDI Input driver would have to convert any running status to a full message before any Windows application receives it. MIDI-OX can accept input from any MIDI DRIVER (not application). Not aware of any specific DOS application, but you'd have to actually have DOS installed to get completely raw data, as Windows controls the access to the hardware I/O ports, and abstracts the input. It's possible a DOS MIDI viewer will show you the raw input that is the same as that supplied to the MIDI port, but not guaranteed.

Thanks for the help. I found a DOS viewer. The nice folks at Voyetra are giving away my second sequencer SequencerPlus at http://www.voyetra.com/site/kb_ftp/340ftp.asp (Look at the bottom of the page) don't forget the driver for your MIDI adapter Fired up an old 486 with an old MPU interface and off it went. For thoes that haven't seen this sequencer before, after it starts up - it may take a while - press 'x' then 'm' to get to the MIDI viewer.
