sorry postd this in the wrong section. this is where it really belongs:
trying to use a stand alone virtual instrument with sibelius 4. Turned off kontakt player. Set playback to midi yoke 1. Set input of virtual instrument to MIDI yoke 1. --Works fine -- BUT get " error message 8 midi sub-system returned an error, perhaps another MIDI device is running, " when I am trying to set input from sound card (DMX 6fire) in Sibelius.
Anyone know what i'm doing wrong, or perhaps my gear won't support my needs?

Try to turn off all divices under "find new devices".
Then only click the one you want to use for play back.
in this case i would leave the midiyokes to "on"

You can find this under Play-devices. click under use on the no at every device you are not using. Keep in mind, you might want to leave mide tru button marked. and also your input device to the name you aer working with, for instance usb audio keyboard.
in sibelius you also have to set the midi channels per instrument, not just midi yoke 1 and 2 etc.
And in your stand alone program, also make sure the setup is correct and turned on under midi.
File-Setup-midi- check on or off for the devises so they are in sinc with the notation program.
Also make sure your buffer size and asio config.
The smaller, the more pc problems can show up. the bigger, the better the playback is ,(unless you play it by hands,-live-you might not want a delay in output.)
Hope this worked. if not.....  DON'T GIVE UP
(ps. re -start your compute once in a while...)
