midiyoke and softsynths

on my win2k system (toshiba satellite pro 4600)
i have the standard micsosoft softsynth that comes
with the operating system, and also a yamaha
softsynth coming from toshiba).
for "serious work" i use a roland sc8820 connected via usb.
midiyoke works as it should with the soundcanvas.
using the softsynths, however, creates all sorts of problems.
when using midiox, connecting midiyox out with one of the softsynths i can play on the keyboard.
no i do a more complex setup.
start two instances of midiox,
instanc 1 has input midiyoke 1 output softsynth.
instance 2 has input midiyoke 2, output midiyoke 1.

i can play the keyboard in instance 1 and i hear the sounds
(l also see midi port activity monitor in the display)
when i play the keyboard in instance 2 of midi ox,
i see that this instance creates midi events,
and instanmce one receives the midi events.
but instnace one does NOT have any actovoty on the out port, and consequentl;y there is no sound.
any ideas what is happening?

setups like this one worked in win98.

Make sure the input port is attached to the output port in instance 1: Open Options | MIDI Devices... Expand the Output port in the Port Mapping window, and make sure the Input Port is attached.  If it isn't, the easiest way to connect them is to check "[x] Automatically attach inputs to outputs during selection", and then unselect and reselect the input port.  It should now display in the Port Mapping.  After you choose OK to close MIDI Devices, you should get output on your Softsynth (and activity in the Port Status window).
