Vista installation: This is how (easy)

Hello! (my first post here)

I got Midi Yoke installed and working on MS Vista 32bit Final version by doing the following:

1. Download the MIDI Yoke NT 1.74 Installer.
2. Run "MSCONFIG" from the Run-menu (Win+R).
3. Go to the "Tools"-tab and select "Disable UAC".
4. Press "Launch". Close the CMD-window.
5. Restart your computer and install MIDI Yoke Wink

The Vista UAC(User account control) is making the MIDI Yoke installer problems. Feel free to turn the UAC back on later by doing steps 2 to 5 again..

Have a nice day Wink

Hi, just wanted to confirm that this works on Windows Vista 64 too. Installed on Vista ultimate 64-bit and works fine.

It will install on Vista x64 (without UAC), however it will only show up in 32 bit MIDI programs Sad.

There is a way to do this without modifying system configuration. I find it helpful in other situations also, since I am using UAC.

1) create a shortcut to cmd.exe on your desktop:
  • right-click on desktop -> New -> shortcut
  • type c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe in the "Location" box (be sure to use correct drive and directory for c:\windows, as in that should be the location where you installed Windows Vista); click "Next"
  • Type "Administrator CMD" in the name box; click "Finish".

2) set the "Run as Administrator" flag for the cmd:
  • right click on the "Administrator CMD" icon ->  Properties;
  • in the properties dialog on "Shortcut" tab click the "Advanced..." button;
  • in the Advanced properties dialog make sure "Run as administrator" box is checked; click "OK"; then "OK" again to close the properties dialog.

3) launch the Admin CMD by doubleclicking on it (it will ask you to type in the Administrator password or just Continue, depending on whether you are an admin or not). This will open cmd.exe window.

4) in the cmd window at the prompt type full path to midi Yoke installer and hit Enter. For example:

c:\windows\system32>c:\downloads\MidiYokeSetup.msi

5) go through the installer steps as usual. It should tell you that a reboot is needed at the end.

The Admin CMD shortcut comes in handy in other situations, where legacy applications need to run as administrator, so I generally leave it on the desktop.

Thanks for the tip, onqel.  I don't think I will be going to Vista, ever, but I appreciate this tip for those who do.

I just turned off UAC in Control Panel/User Accounts, restarted vista and then installed no probs. Then turned UAC back on.  Thanks for pointing me to UAC though.

Thank you, John from Norway -- that was a very helpful advice. You saved my day by not only getting Midi Yoke up and running under Windows Vista, but also another program (FX Teleport) -- all this after a couple of frustrating hours. You are a good man.  Smiley

Question for Jamie O'Connell (hope you see this as moderator): I am using Midi Yoke professionally - am I correct that I do not need to purchase a license (in that the licence only applies for Midi-OX)?

Thanks,
Peter

To get RUN on vista you can type WIN+R or type RUN into the "Start Search" box at the bottom of the Start Menu.  After the RUN box opens, type MSCONFIG.

Thanks for the advice, it all seems to have installed properly.

Now i'm having problems figuring out how to use it.

My set-up is quite basic, I have a behringer uma25 controller
keyboard (midi/audio interface), running Ableton Live on a laptop.

So any suggestions on how to set up the midi-ox and yoke would be great.

I have read the instructions but can't really make head nor tails of them.

I take it I open midi-ox before I run live, or is it the other way round?

Also, I can't seem to find which yoke routings are needed to get the controller talking to ableton.

I will be persevering on my own but if someone can speed things up and come up with an answer then even better.

Cheers

after installing vista service pack 2, the drivers installed under service pack 1 were not available.

uninstalling and then installing using this cmd.com method then rebooting... made the drivers available again.

thanks for the documentation.

I used MIDI Yoke before on a Windows 98 system with Encore 4.0 and Reason 2.5 and got very good results.
I recently upgraded to a Vista 32-bit machine with Encore 5.0 and VI.One.  The install went off without a hitch - those programs even picked it up automatically.
The problem I am having now, though, is playback.  Everything is basically working fine, but I keep getting all these 'phantom' notes from nowhere, as well as dropped notes.
Is there a certain version of MY that works best with Vista, or is there a compatability issue between the two?

To paraphrase rcross for Windows 7:
1) Pin CMD.EXE to your START menu.
2) Right-Click and select Run as Administrator.
3) Run the installer MSI file.
4) Close the CMD window.

NSIS has an option for an installer to request raised Administrator privilege on Vista (and Windows 7).  Could the MidiYoke installer be repackaged to request this to see if it helps?
